Gone are the days when you could just cat your sound file to /dev/audio.
Devices
First there was Linux Sound System.
Then we got ALSA the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture.
But thanks to backwards compatibility tricks OSS apps can use ALSA and ALSA apps can use OSS.
Daemons
- But only one app could play sound at a time, so the Daemons came along
- Arts
- Jack
The biggest Daemon of them all PulseAudio
